Click to read a letter from Dr. Farrell and information and resources about H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) Outbreak. The district has been notified that Greene County has one confirmed case of H1N1 flu, as does Albany County. Both our Greene County Department of Health and the NYS Department of Health have advised that there is no cause for alarm. The affected individual in Greene County is an adult who has responded to treatment. The district will continue to work with both our school physician services and the County Department of Health to monitor the progress of this flu, and we continue to maintain all necessary sanitary precautions. Our doorknobs, water fountains, physical education equipment, keyboards, and other "shared surfaces" are cleaned daily, and air filters in our ventilators are changed more frequently than required. Should your child have flu-like symptoms please keep him/her at home, and consult your physician for further advice if your child's condition does not improve. Please also encourage your child to practice good sanitary habits, including frequent hand washing, coughing into his/her elbow, and swift disposal of tissues. Sharing drinks or food, and frequent touching of the face is to be discouraged. The health and safety of our children is our foremost concern. The district will respond to all directives of our county health department in this matter. Please contact the health department or your physician should you have additional concerns, and, your child's principal or my office should you have questions regarding your school district.

The use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers in public schools has been regulated by the State Education Department, requiring a physician's note for the use of over-the-counter medication administration in the school setting. Due to the increase in MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) cases reported in schools recently, public school medical directors in New York have been authorized to approve and permit the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers without a physician's order.
