Catskill High School Honors Veterans

Catskill High School honored area veterans with a special Veterans Day Assembly held November 10th in the school’s auditorium. During her opening remarks, Ms. Barkman, our interim superintendent, welcomed the veterans to Catskill High and thanked them for their service.

In the audience were local men and women representing service in every major conflict the United States has been involved in over the past seventy-five years – World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq – about thirty veterans in total.

The hour-long event included patriotic songs such as the “Stars and Stripes Forever” played by our school’s Symphonic Band and “A Tribute to the Armed Services” sung by the Concert Chorus & Treblaires.

Roger F. LaneThe day’s guest speaker was Roger F. Lane, a Navy veteran and Catskill graduate, class of 1966, who spoke about his decision to join the service at a time when the Vietnam War was in full swing. Other speakers included senior class president Whitney Cowan and Wanda Traver of the Daughters of the American Revolution, On-Ti-Ora chapter. Closing remarks were made by student government secretary Alley Lemus and Mrs. Hauser, CHS Principal.

After the ceremony, all veterans along with the students who participated in the ceremony were invited to enjoy refreshments at a reception in the school library.
