Congratulations to the Catskill Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Team! Our team placed first in their division at the Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind tournament held March 9 at Coxsackie-Athens CSD.
In their competition problem, Timeless Carnival, the team had to build a light structure out of balsa wood, and, while performing a carnival-themed skit, launch it into the air and then stack weights on it. Weighing only 15 grams itself, their structure held the highest weight of any team in the competition, a whopping 715 lbs!
In addition to the team placing first in their division, team member Angelina Shanley won an individual award, the coveted OMER (Odyssey of the Mind’er) Award for her outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, endless courage and determination.
Placing first in the regional competition means the team now advances to the State tournament at Binghamton University on March 23rd!
“It was awesome for us to go through it together and win,” said Angelina. “This competition caused us to realize we had a lot of things to work on and we are really excited to have an opportunity to improve what we have.”
The team is Elizabeth DuBois, Karsen Chiminelli, Angelina Shanley, Emily Elizabeth Starr, Alyciana Salters, Layyla Lavoie, and Charlotte DuBois with advisors Nichole Sallese and Karen Vanwie.
