CTE Hospitality & Tourism Career Research

Students in Catskill’s CTE Hospitality & Tourism pathway recently completed an in-depth career research project designed to connect classroom learning with real-world industry experience. Students not only expanded their understanding of hospitality and touris m careers, but also strengthened research, public speaking, and professional networking skills.

As part of the project, students researched diverse career pathways within the hospitality and tourism field and conducted in-depth interviews with local professionals actively working in related careers. The professionals they interviewed included Sara Cooper, a travel agent from The Cooper Travel Company, who shared insight into trip planning, client relations, and the evolving role of technology in the travel industry; Randall Griffin, a chauffeur from Coxsackie Transportation, who discussed customer service expectations, safety standards, and professionalism within the transportation sector; Timothy Erben, a fitness and wellness coordinator from The Studio, who explained the importance of wellness programming, guest engagement, and health trends within hospitality settings; and Karin Henderson, a graphic designer, who highlighted the role of branding, marketing, and visual communication in promoting hospitality and tourism businesses.

The project culminated in formal student presentations showcasing their research, interview findings, and personal reflections. Ingrid O’Connell, a professor from Schenectady County Community College (SCCC), viewed the students’ final presentations in person and provided them with valuable feedback and a post-secondary education perspective on their work.

“This project gave students a meaningful opportunity to engage directly with professionals in the field while developing essential communication and presentation skills,” said Kelly Marino, CTE educator. “Having their work reviewed by a college professor further reinforced the real-world relevance of the assignment.”

This collaboration with Schenectady County Community College emphasizes our program’s commitment to college and career readiness, while highlighting the importance of experiential, community-based learning. The Hospitality and Tourism program continues to provide students with authentic learning experiences that prepare them for future success in higher education and the workforce.
