Mary DeSimone

After having worked for almost three decades in New York State public school districts, I recently retired. I miss seeing students every day. I wish to serve students, parents/guardians, staff and the community as a school board member in my own school district. I am running for an open seat on the Board of Education for the Catskill Central School District.

I was born in Catskill, went through Catskill schools, and lived in the village most of my life. My grandson will be attending Catskill Elementary School in a couple of years. I want him to have the best education possible, as I had enjoyed in Catskill schools.

After graduating from Catskill High School, I graduated from Columbia-Greene Community College. I went on to graduate with my bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Oswego, with a double major in communications and music. I earned my master’s degree at Ithaca College in educational communications. I also completed the graduate program in educational administration at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

After working for twenty-eight years in school district administration in New York State, I retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel for the East Ramapo Central School District in Rockland County, New York. If elected to the Catskill School Board, I would support the district to hire, develop and retain the most qualified, diverse, student-focused staff members.

Additional experience to support my candidacy: I was appointed as my school district’s diversity officer and Title IX officer; have extensive experience in school district law and in legal proceedings; handled contract negotiations for many bargaining units; was the lead administrator in the hiring process for school district superintendents; worked as a key person in the development and communication of school budgets; and attended hundreds of school board Meetings.

If elected, I promise to always keep in mind what is best for students. I would attend as many Catskill Central School District prek-12 school functions as possible, including sports functions and dramatic productions. I was a cheerleader in high school – I would be a cheerleader again, for the entire student body!
