Stephanie Oakley-Edwards

My name is Stephanie Oakley-Edwards and I am running for a seat with the school board for Catskill Central School District. I am a long-time resident of the town of Catskill, growing up in Palenville and now residing in Kiskatom. I graduated from Catskill High School and the College of Saint Rose with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy Birth to 2nd Grade. I am a single mother of a son currently attending Catskill Elementary School. I feel I would be a great addition to the school board for various reasons.

I am an Office Manager for a very busy and prominent auto collision repair shop, and have been there for 11 years. On a day-to-day basis I am held accountable for multiple aspects within the business, including decision making, budgets, overseeing productivity of the business overall and communicating effectively with customers and insurance companies. I think my position as an Office Manager would be beneficial, due to the many transferable skills needed to be an effective board member, such as communication skills, community participation, decision making, information processing and being a team player.

One of my biggest accomplishments in life thus far, has been receiving my Master’s Degree. My background in education has given me the opportunity to grow professionally and use my knowledge in various situations. My degrees have helped me to understand and help young individuals. I am a huge advocate for reading literacy. I tutored family members at a young age who have demonstrated difficulty with reading and comprehension skills to help them succeed in school. I have been an active member in my church, Sacred Heart in Palenville, volunteering as a Religious Education teacher for 1st grade students. I am a strong believer in teaching reading and writing across the curriculum and include literacy activities in catechism assignments.

I believe I would be an asset to the Catskill Board of Education, advocating for the needs of our community. As a single mother who works full time and owns a home in the Catskill School District, I have a vested interest in the future of our children attending Pre-k through 12 at CCSD. The COVID pandemic has greatly affected the way teachers can engage students in their education. I am concerned as a parent, and resident of the Catskill School District, and I would like to be a part of the resolution, helping to support teachers and students to overcome this obstacle. These children are our future and deserve opportunities to achieve their highest performance abilities. I am prepared, willing and ready to join the Board of Education, dedicating my assistance to this team and supporting the Catskill Cats.
