As part of their social emotional learning lessons, students in Mrs. Lopez and Mrs. Herbek's classroom participate in a weekly kindness project designed to help them recognize and appreciate people who are kind to them. Throughout their lessons and the school day, kindness and appreciation are modeled and emphasized, helping students understand the importance of treating others with compassion and gratitude.
Throughout the first month of school students celebrated the kindness shown to them by many members of their school community including, district leaders who visited their classrooms and made them feel safe, the main office staff who help them during arrival and dismissal, a friend who assists them in the cafeteria, their school therapists, specials teachers, and parents.
To show their appreciation, students created special pieces of artwork featuring two handprints and a heartfelt message. They also prepared small bags filled with treats. Each student then delivered their gift to someone they felt was deserving of recognition for their kindness.
The students will continue to spread kindness each week, showing appreciation to those who treat them with kindness, while making a positive impact in the school community.
