Please read the following information about the January 2020 local and Regents examinations that will be administered at the High School.
Dates
Local and Regents exams are scheduled for Tuesday, January 21 through Friday, January 24, 2020. Classes at the High School will not be in session on these days. Students should only report to school if they have an exam or scheduled review session. Classroom teachers will inform students of the times and locations of exams.
Attendance
The importance of participating in Regents and/or local final or midterm exams cannot be emphasized enough. Students enrolled in courses for which there are midterm or final examinations are responsible for taking tests on given dates and times. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each examination period and phone calls will be made to verify each absence. The scheduling of personal appointments, vacations or meeting obligations other than those of an emergency nature shall not constitute a valid reason for missing an examination and will result in a grade of zero. Valid reasons include illness or injury confirmed by a physician’s note; death in family; or court appearance confirmed by court documentation. Notification to the attendance clerk or school counselor is mandatory, who will then provide the notification to the Principal. Eligibility for making-up a local examination will be determined by the Principal. Once the absence has been approved, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher to reschedule the exam. If arrangements for make-up examinations have not been made prior to the conclusion of the examination period, those unscheduled students shall receive an examination grade of zero.
Universal Admission Deadline Times for Regents Examinations
Students taking Regents exams will not be admitted into the exam room after the State Universal Admission Deadline times of 10 a.m. for the morning exams and 2 p.m. for the afternoon exams.
Universal Dismissal Times for Regents Examinations
For the morning session, a student cannot be dismissed from a Regents exam prior to 10 a.m. For the afternoon session, a student cannot be dismissed from a Regents exam prior to 2 p.m. After being dismissed from the morning exams, students may use the cafeteria to wait for their next exam. Food will be available to purchase. If students do not have an afternoon exam, they can leave the building.
Transportation Schedule
Morning Route: Regular pick-up and arrival to school.
12:00 p.m. Route: For those students who only have morning exams, buses will transport them home.
2:17 p.m. Route: Regular dismissal. If a student does not have an examination during one of the morning testing sessions, he/she can come to school on the regular morning bus and remain in a designated study area until his/her afternoon exam begins. Students also have the option of securing their own transportation. For those students who will be driving to school, they may park on campus during the exam period.
Cafeteria
The cafeteria kitchen will be open throughout the week (January 21 – January 24). Breakfast will be available from 7:17 a.m.- 7:30 a.m. Lunch will be available from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Unauthorized Materials
When students enter the exam room, they are not allowed to bring in unauthorized materials, i.e., backpacks, bags, hats or non-religious head wear, food, beverages (including water), electronic devices, notes, or other printed material that would give them an unfair advantage. This applies to all exams (Regents, midterms and finals). With regards to cell phones, please see the detailed information: “All students are prohibited from bringing cell phones and certain other electronic devices into a classroom or other location where a State examination is being administered. Test proctors, test monitors and school officials shall retain the right to collect and hold any prohibited electronic devices prior to the start of the test administration. Admission to the test shall be denied to any student who is in possession of a cell phone or other prohibited electronic device and refuses to relinquish it.” If the principal determines that a student “has a prohibited device in his or her possession during the test administration, the student’s test must be invalidated. No score may be calculated for that student.” – NYSED’s Directions for Administering Regents Examinations.
Inclement Weather
“Schools may not administer State examinations when weather conditions are severe enough to warrant closing school and canceling normal bus transportation” (2015 School Administrator’s Manual Secondary Level Administrations, p.1-3). Therefore, Regents examination and RCTs cannot be rescheduled.
No Athletic Contests During Regents Week
No Junior Varsity or Varsity athletic contests are scheduled for Tuesday, January 21 – Thursday, January 23, 2020. Our student-athletes need to prepare and focus on their exams. Athletic competition will resume on Friday, January 24, 2020.
