With Santa’s Helpers busy packing hundreds of bags of groceries for local families in need this holiday season, the High School gym looked akin to Santa’s workshop at the North Pole.
Catskill High School’s Santa’s Helpers program is sponsored by the Student Government and has been a tradition at our school for well over six decades. This year, two dozen student volunteers participated. In the spirit of giving, they went out on the town the weekend before Thanksgiving and collected thousands of dollars in donations – what a generous community we live in! They used the money they raised, along with a $500 donation from Walmart, to purchase enough groceries to provide 60 families with one week’s worth of healthy meals. Special thanks to Slater’s in Cairo for providing the groceries at a discount, allowing Santa’s Helpers to stretch those dollars even further. Then, on the Wednesday before school let out for the holiday break, the students spent several hours systematically sorting all the groceries into care packages for families to pick up later that day or for delivery.
The holidays shine a little brighter each year because of our caring community. Together, Cats can and Cats will!
